No More Mr. Nice Boss: Flexible Employers Were a Pandemic Blip

Were a space alien to have visited the U.S. in late 2020, it might have gotten a very skewed idea about the employee-employer relationship in the world of corporate America. Companies were sending their white collar workers money to buy desks and chairs for their work-from-home offices, and gift baskets to buoy their spirits; they were encouraging them to take vacation days and pay attention to their mental health. They were launching Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs in the wake of the death of George Floyd, pledging to hire and promote more women after #MeToo, and jettisoning tough performance reviews for more “empathetic” evaluations.

片語
1.  pay attention to + N  注意…
The tour guide requested all the tourists to pay attention to the safety instructions listed on the board.

2.  in the wake of + N  在…之後
In the wake of the earthquake, there is a higher risk of tsunami in this area.

(Indirect Object; IO)
send + IO (人) + DO (物)
= send + DO (物) + to + IO (人) *介系詞須為“to”
e.g.
He sent her text messages every night.
= He sent text messages to her every night.

文法點
1. IF + S + were + to V ...,  S + might + V ...
Were + S + to V ...,  S + might + V ...
 “Were + S + to have Vpp..., ...”
e.g.
If the wildfire were to have devastated the old temple, it might have been a cultural misfortune.
= Were the wildfire to have devastated the old temple, it might have been a cultural misfortune.

野火在過去並沒有摧毀(were to have devastated)這座古廟,所以實際上(might have been)文化災難的可能性為零
